Cigarettes= Child Labor

  • Aug. 24th, 2009 at 12:47 PM

Do you know where your tobacco comes from?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090824/ap_on_re_af/af_malawi_child_labor;_ylt=AvZ.MaGLg6hjgphl_bJhmGtvaA8F;_ylu=X3oDMTJxcHM0amowBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMDkwODI0L2FmX21hbGF3aV9jaGlsZF9sYWJvcgRwb3MDNQRzZWMDeW5fYXJ0aWNsZV9zdW1tYXJ5X2xpc3QEc2xrA21hbGF3aWNoaWxkdA--
Excerpt:

Entitled "Hard work, long hours and little pay," the report said workers absorb up to 54 milligrams a day of dissolved nicotine through their skin. The report initially said that is equivalent to 32 cigarettes but Plan International revised it to 50.

"Sometimes it feels like you don't have enough breath, you don't have enough oxygen," an unnamed child tobacco worker in Kasungu, in central Malawi, told Plan International's investigators. "You reach a point where you cannot breathe because of the pain in your chest. Then the blood comes when you vomit. At the end ... you remain with a headache."

The symptoms resemble "green tobacco sickness," said MacDonald Mumba, a Plan International official in Malawi. The malady comes from absorbing nicotine from the skin, particularly from wet tobacco.

Fortune Cookies

  • Jul. 22nd, 2009 at 9:26 AM

I'd been feeling mighty low and apparently the gods of fortune cookies took it upon themselves to remind of my mission/passion/bills in life.

While at P.F. Changs last Wednesday I opened my fortune cookie to find that my foreign word to learn was, and I kid you not, "reporter."

The fortune said, "You are known for being quick in action and decisions."

JJ and I are convinced that this is a positive sign.

Little robots called "tweenbots" have been making rounds in New York city. It relies on human kindness to reach its destination. The little cute robots made me smile and blog. Kacie Kinzer appears to be the mastermind behind the project. Check out the site and watch the video.

I nearly died laughing when I read that RadarOnline had done a investigative report by PEAKING THROUGH THE FENCED IN GM PARKING LOT! They wanted to see what people were driving. It turns out mostly foreign cars.

Words can not describe how funny and sad this is. I hope the American people don't accept this as real journalism.

It seems that an asteroid just zipped by earth. According to the article it is similar in size to the one that leveled some 800 square miles of forest in Siberia in 1908.

The Gay Rights Fight Continues

  • Mar. 3rd, 2009 at 9:29 PM

I highly recommend that people get out and see "Milk" while they still can. It is an amazing movie. Time Magazine did an excellent job chronicling the life of the "Mayor of Castro Street." Just like the movie, the article leaves you wondering what could have been.

Also, Couples in Massachusetts are suing the federal government over everyday mundane things that we all take for granted: joint taxes, joint health care, social security etc...

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/03/03/same.sex.lawsuit/index.html

Apparently the problems stems from a bill signed in '96 that federally defines marriage as that between a man and a woman. Marriage, to the best of my knowledge within the states, is a state by state decision.

I need a Wisconsin Pharmacist!

  • Jan. 7th, 2009 at 4:07 PM

I am doing a story and I need to talk to a pharmacist that is willing to talk about being a pharmacist and not regurgitate their companies drug program.

If anyone knows a pharmacist personally please pass my info along to them. The sooner the better. They can remain anonymous. Milwaukee area preferred.

Thanks!

I need a job

  • Jan. 6th, 2009 at 5:51 PM

I know that I have been neglecting my blogs as of late, but I've been working on a story and trying to find a job. After sending out 30+ applications three things have happened:

1. I've run out of places to apply to.
2. I've received one rejection.
3. I've received one request for an interview.

Is job searching always like making a baby? Only the fastest swimmers win? I know I have only been looking for two weeks, but if I have to do this for another six months I may have to cry.

How's by you?

Contraband found in Texas Jail

  • Jan. 3rd, 2009 at 11:21 AM

I'm not talking pills and weapons (those were found in the cells), but recliners and a rake made of nails. This is apparently the same jail where four prisoners broke out of a few years earlier.
